Misconceptions: We are not a big corporation and we do not make a lot of money. It is very difficult to make money on the internet, contrary to popular opinion. We started this website as a hobby and continue it because we love it. But we do need help to keep it going! Who we are: SomewhereInCanada.com consists of two people. Shannon is the heart of the operation. She loved contesting and freebies and noted that there were very few sites in those areas that were Canadian friendly. She talked her wonderful husband into assisting her in her dream of creating this fine site. Vince her loving and funny assistant takes care of the technical side of the site and all the dry humor. Scripting, graphics, custom software, and many areas of the website (IE: The Playground) are but a few of his tasks. He has recently been promoted and given the hat to Public Relations and Tech Support. *Insert Maniacal Laughter Here* For more information about us, visit our About page. Time spent on SomewhereInCanada.com: Most days Shannon spends 6-8 hours a day working on the site. Her dedication to trying to make the site the best she can is very admirable. Her three kitties, as well as myself, wish she would take a break to play more often than she does. I usually get in anywhere from 3-4 hours of work on the site after a full day of work and close to another 16 hours or more on the weekends. How we earn money: My day time job earns enough to feed the cats. SomewhereInCanada.com makes a few dollars here and there through 'affiliate' programs. (Please Note: We avoid annoying Pop-Up Windows and focus our ads to Canadian friendly sites. This further reduces the possibilities for income) Our network overhead and associated costs (contest prizes, software, etc) eat up what little we do make and more. We have a company name Emogic in case we make it big. Where the money will go: Donations will go directly into our site overhead. It costs hundreds of dollars a year just to host this website (eg. for the domain name, use of a server, traffic costs, etc). We pay for our own host so that we completely control all the information on our website (for your privacy protection), to ensure speed and reliability; and so that we aren't forced to advertise for other companies (or have pop-up advertising). Other costs include computer hardware, software, promotion, advertising, contest prizes, postage, shipping, office supplies, etc. And, of course, this doesn't include the many hours per day of labour we spend working on the site. Why you should donate: Although this site is ultimately a labor of love, we work very long and hard and cover site expenses out of our own pockets. In addition dealing with the public can eat up a very large portion of our time and can be emotionally draining. We get some positive feedback, but human nature being what it is, forces us to eat large slices of disheartening, negative feedback. There have been some days when we wonder why we provide so much entirely for free. Then we get off our Shetland Pony and get back to what we love. How much should you donate: That is completely up to you. If you use our site on a regular basis, please take into consideration the usefulness of the site. Perhaps a small donation each time you win something in part because of our site? If nothing else, even a few dollars will make us feel that our invested time, effort and money have contributed to a valuable site. What else can you donate: There are many other ways that you can support our site other than money. But don't let that stop you!
We will also accept other types of donations. You can send them to us at the address above. Some suggestions:
Is my donation tax deductible: No it is not. As we are not a registered charity, you cannot claim any donations to our site on your taxes. Each and every donation will be posted on the Wall of Thanks page, and if you give us an address, we will send you a Somewhere in Canada pen as a token of thanks! We hope that you continue to use and enjoy our site. Always feel free to contact us with your suggestions and questions, whether you donate or not!
