Shuffle the WEB

What does this 'Shuffle the WEB Somewhere in Canada (and worldwide)' page do?

This page will allow you to start at any existing web page, randomly chooses a link on that page, loads that page, randomly chooses a link on that page, etc as many times as you like. It then opens the last randomly selected page for viewing.

You choose a start page and Shuffle the Web will randomly take you to a link on that page. By changing the 'Number of search levels', it will do this recursively, taking you to what we hope will be an interesting web page.

Obviously the success will depend on your start page and the number of levels you choose. Too few will take you to pages you have been to. Too many will most likely lead you to a 'contact' or 'about' page. There is no magic number. Experimentation is the best rule.

Why would I want to randomly surf the web?

I often boggle at the volume of interesting information on the web. It can be so overwhelming that I usually stare blankly at my screen wondering what subject I should look up to satisfy my curiosity. No longer! Just click and see where you end up. Don't like it? Click again. If you choose a suitable start page and the right number of search levels you will usually find something interesting in seconds.

What does 'Number of search levels' do?

This determines how many pages you will jump through before it displays the last page. Too few and you will not get much variation in the type of pages you will see. Too many and you will most likely end up with dead links. Experimentation is suggested. Obviously the greater the level the longer the wait.

What does 'Starting page' do?

This is the first page that will be searched for a random link. If you want an interesting page to eventually show up, choose a starting page with many varied links. We suggest something like www.memepool.com , www.yahoo.com , www.altavista.com ,etc. But any page with external links will do.

What does 'Randomize Start Page' do?

This will randomly select one of our suggested starting pages for you. This may mot be the best option since different starting pages work better with different search level values!

How do I know when my page has been found?

When the script has located the final page in the search, It will display the new link in a new window and then load the page in that window. Close the window when you are done. It is cold outside!

It didn't find anything!

Occasionally, due to an empty link, 'Now loading:' will appear. Just close the window and try again.
